ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL

INGREDIENT PURIFICATION

The center of pharmaceutical products are active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and are often the result of various process steps. We will help determine the optimum carbon for these products for the final purification step which will minimize the loss of product. We must also take into account the special criteria about purity and other characteristics that your method needs.

Unwanted by-products are often produced during the processing of the active pharmaceutical intermediates (API). The following benefits come from our high purity powdered activated carbons (PAC) products:

  • Extremely high purity to prevent any leaching of impurities into the API

  • High efficiency in removal resulting in low dosages and reducing loss of API

PROCESS

Many methods for the manufacture of on-patent and bulk drugs include the use of bulk powdered activated carbon (PAC) in a crucial purification step to make the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) safe for human use. The primary impurities include unwanted colors, metals, traces of catalysts (formed by-products), and impurities associated with the process.

The method typically involves several steps. First, mass-powdered activated carbon (PAC) is dosed into a mixing vessel and combined with the solution of the drug. This includes agitation for sufficient time to cause the molecules of impurity to come into contact with and be adsorbed by the activated carbon powder (PAC)

Finally, after the adsorption of the impurities, bulk powdered activated carbon (PAC) is extracted from the cycle. Bulk carbon is typically extracted through a method of cake filtration, where particles build up on the surface of a filter sheet that forms a layer. Such steps of adsorption and filtration polishing give a pure solution.
