EDIBLE OILS

Treatment with Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) is used to remove contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), dioxins, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) from oils for animal or human consumption.

CHALLENGE & SOLUTION

Many edible oils are processed from crude vegetable oils and marine oils which are used as food additives. Often these crude oils contain high levels of PAHs and other persistent organic pollutants including PCBs, dioxin, furan, pesticides, and herbicides. Given the serious health effects of these contaminants, these contaminants must be removed to make processed edible oils fit for human consumption. Edible oils come from numerous sources, each with varying degrees of contaminants.

Another important goal is the removal of unwanted colors from oils. Activated carbon is the preferred decolorization technique for biological oils extracted from fish and plants, since bleaching earths are no longer permitted for this purpose. Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) is highly effective for eliminating PAHs and undesirable colors in the oil refining field.
